Meet Your Fellow Swimmers:
Let’s meet two new swimmers: Lynn Palmer from Eureka Springs, and Bauer Duke from Pine Bluff. It’s fun to put faces with names and read about the lives, goals, and achievements of our fellow swimmers. If you haven’t done so already, please fill out this form and YOU will be highlighted in the future.
Arkansas Masters Swimming Car Decal:
We have ordered these awesome car decals and have distributed them to most of our swimmers I believe. If you haven’t received one and would like one, please send your address to me at: carie.obanion@gmail.com The decal measures about 4X4.5 inches.
Open Water Champ!
Arkansas swimmer Daryl Sroufe competed in the Open Water Sprint Championship on June 9th in southern Illinois and came away with a BLUE RIBBON in his age group. Way to go Daryl!
An Author in our Midst:
I recently learned that Marvin Schwartz (Little Rock masters swimmer) has authored several books, two of which include swimming topics:
Racing Starts: A History of Competitive Swimming in Central Arkansas (published in 2011)
“The story of competitive swimming from the 1920s through 2010 is presented in a large-format book with numerous color photos, newspaper clippings, and swimming memorabilia. The book presents a chronology of athletes, coaches, and community organizations, from the earliest days of Little Rock Boys Clubs and YMCA swim teams through the creation of modern aquatic facilities and swimming teams dedicated to producing Olympic athletes.”
True Stories (2018)
(From Marvin’s own words) “I am happy to announce the publication of my new book, “True Stories.” The paperback volume contains six memoirs/essays of some of my travels and adventures.
The book is listed for $15. You can get in touch with me for an autographed copy or purchase it through Amazon and Kindle. To find the link, simply enter: “Marvin Schwartz True Stories”
Book summary from the back cover:
“True Stories” offers a portrait of American history and culture that spans a century. In 1910, a newly-arrived immigrant sees the Statue of Liberty and makes a bold gesture of feminist independence. In 2010, a rural Arkansas cemetery is the site for church funeral with an unexpected hilarious ending. In the years between, a cross-country hitchhiking trip includes an interlude in a Nebraska jail, a Guatemala travelogue tells of a near-disaster drug search, and an adult swimming competition reaches a fateful conclusion. In these and other episodes from the author’s life, “True Stories” presents a journey of self-discovery, moving from reckless youthful engagement to a mature compassion.
