Short Course Yards Top 10 Results from 2021
It was a weird year (duh!), with a limited number of meets, not to mention no SCY Nationals held during the Top 10 timeframe. This meant, if you were able to compete in a meet, you had a much better chance of setting a Top 10 time than in a “normal” year. Here are the results for Arkansas LMSC Top 10 SCY, 2021. Friday Night Freestyle Frenzy
A great turnout and lots of fun describes the Jan. 7th meet in Bentonville. Swimmers from Arkansas and a few surrounding states attended, but the largest contingent was from Swim Oz, a USMS gold club in Northwest Arkansas. And who knew that the 25 Free is now a Top 10 event? All freestyle events from the 25 to the 1650 were offered, and for many of our swimmers it was their very first masters meet!
The Plunge and Glide contest during the middle of the meet was fun as well. Big surprise that Byron Shefchik won that contest! I bet he’s enjoying his new plunger!

Steffan Sarkin’s English Channel Challenge
Most of you know that Steffan Sarkin of Fayetteville has swum the English Channel several times and has used the event as a fundraiser for Arkansas Children’s Hospital in honor of his son’s successful surgery there in 2009. In 2010, Steffan’s family established the English Channel Challenge for Children’s. Its original purpose was a one-time fundraising event for his solo swim crossing of the English Channel, but it became something bigger. It turned into an annual fundraising swim challenge for Arkansas Children’s Hospital, which has now raised nearly $450,000.
This year, Steffan had planned to swim the channel in October, but weather prevented that from happening. He returned to Arkansas and completed a substitute swim instead. He reported that it took place on Thursday November 11th, where he completed an unassisted solo swim of 18 miles on Beaver Lake, in 10hrs, 14 min. Water temp ranged from 53.3F-56.6F, and air temp ranged from 48F-57F on a sunny clear day. A strong NNW 15-20mph wind set back the best laid plans for 21 miles in what was a late time of year to attempt such a long-distance swim without a support crew. Still, a great accomplishment. Good work Steffan!

Arkansas Masters Annual Meeting
The annual meeting is open to all members of Arkansas Masters and will take place via zoom on Sunday, Feb. 6th at 6:30pm. If you wish to attend, please email Bonnie Adams (Bonnie@thejoysofswimming.com) for the Zoom link.
Swim Across America, Searcy Ar.
The Searcy masters swimmers have organized a Swim Across America event (pool event) on March 5th. Swimmers can participate in person, or on their own. The goal is to raise money for Cancer Research and have fun swimming! This is the first SAA event in Arkansas and it would be great to have groups around the state support this cause.
